Edgecombe County, N. C.  In the name of God, Amen, this — day of September in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and eighty-seven, I JESSE BAKER of edgecombe County, in the State of North Carolina being of sound and disposing mind and memory, and calling to mind the frailty and uncertainty of the temporal state and knowing that all flesh must yield unto death when it pleases God to call, and for the settling of my estate which it hath pleased God to bestow on me, do order, give and dispose of the same in manner and form following.

Imprimus, my will and desire is that a sufficiency of my estate to be disposed of at the discretion of my executors hereafter mentioned to purchase a reasonable quantity or tract of land for the support and maintenance of my wife Martha Baker and my children; Jonathan Baker, Moses Baker, Aaron Baker and David Baker.  My will further is that my loving wife Martha Baker possess and enjoy the said land above mentioned to be purchased and all the residue and remainder part of my estate of what kind of nature so ever after my just debts are paid during her natural life or widowhood and no longer, and after her marriage or death, the said land purchased as above mentioned if any such, together with all the residue and remainder of my estate, be equally divided amongst my sons aforenamed, viz; Jonathan, Moses, Aaron and David Baker, at the discretion of my executors, hereafter named to them their heirs assigns forever.

I hereby nominate, constitute and appoint my friends Thomas Mercer and Richard Strother, executors to this my last Will and Testament, hereby declaring this to be my last Will and Testament and revoking all others and former Will or Wills, Testament or Testaments by me made and declare this and this only to be my last Will and Testament, in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal, the day and year above written.
